World Suicide Prevention Day: being there when it matters most
Every 53 seconds, someone in the UK reaches out to Shout for a conversation that might just save their life.
This World Suicide Prevention Day, we’re sharing Kane’s story. Kane, a Shout Volunteer turned staff member, once used the skills he gained through volunteering to support a young girl whose life was at risk on a bridge. By drawing on his volunteer experience, he was able to support her to stay calm and safe while waiting for the emergency services to arrive.

I can still picture the raw emotion on her face and almost shock, really, that someone had stopped to talk to her

Can you help us continue to be there for people in life-saving situations like the one Kane faced?
£10 can cover the cost of a life-saving conversation.
People reach out to us for a number of reasons, from suicidal thoughts and feelings, to anxiety, depression, loneliness, bullying, relationship problems and more.
Our trained volunteers are there to listen, 24/7, 365 days a year, helping people move from moments of crisis to a calmer place where they can take their next step towards support. They’ve supported over a million people since we launched in 2019.
With your support, we can:
- Train more volunteers with life-saving skills
- Ensure Shout continues to be available 24/7, every day of the year
- Provide thousands more people with the chance to be heard when they need it most
