How mums can look after their wellbeing
Being a mum is a privilege and a joy. But it can also come with an ongoing anxiety about whether you’re getting it right, whether you’re a good enough mum and if you’re the only one who feels the way you do. Read and share these tips below for any mums who might need support.
- It's important to prioritise what you need for your own wellbeing; making time for yourself is as important as looking after everyone else in the family
- Try to stay connected to your friends. Even if it’s hard to find time for a call, a quick message or text can help you stay in touch and know you’re not alone
- Getting out of the house can feel like a huge effort, but even just a short time outside can make a big difference to how you feel and for your mental health
- No one is a perfect mum all of the time and we are all trying to find our way; it is often a relief to hear from another mum brave enough to speak up and share some of the struggles they are experiencing. By being honest with others, we can help break down the myth that everyone else is a happy and confident mum all of the time, and we are the only one who is finding it tough
- It’s ok to ask for help. Being a parent is hard work; don’t be afraid to take up offers of practical help from friends and family. If you’re worried about how you are feeling, please speak to your GP, midwife or health visitor who will help you find the support that you need.
- Remember you can always text SHOUT to 85258 to speak to a trained Shout Volunteer confidentially.
