"It works brilliantly for me": Rosie's Shout Volunteer story
Rosie explains how the flexibility and the process of helping others through text makes volunteering both accessible and rewarding and how, six years on, she still finds it incredibly rewarding to be there for texters in their moments of crisis.
What made you decide to become a volunteer?
I became aware of Shout's work through my work and just thought it was such a fantastic service and that the training and volunteering would fit in alongside my job really well.
Testimonials
I had looked at volunteering for other charities before, but thought the text service was beneficial for so many people. I couldn't wait to get started.
What do you find most rewarding about being a Shout Volunteer?
Even after a hard shift you know you have been there for someone who, more often that not, didn't have anyone to talk to. Just listening, acknowledging and responding to them can make such a difference and reassures me I have helped in their moment of crisis.

What are some of the challenges you’ve experienced?
I do find it hard when I don't feel a conversation has been resolved - a texter might not be willing to work with you or has suddenly stopped the conversation. In those moments I sometimes feel like I have failed, but I know that's not the case.
How do you find volunteering for a digital organisation?
It works brilliantly for me - Shout is such an easy organisation to volunteer with and the shifts fit perfectly around my work and home life.
Have you been able to use any of the training or skills you’ve developed as a Shout Volunteer in your day-to-day life?
I think I've become a better listener, taking time to respond when someone is talking and letting them speak, rather than adding my own thoughts or experiences.
Testimonials
I also have a better understanding of a variety of issues and what can affect people's mental health, which allows me to be more understanding and appreciate each case.
I support the wellbeing team at my work so developing skills in listening, understanding and respecting someone's confidentially and taking time with them have been so key.
Would you recommend becoming a Shout Volunteer?
I absolutely would. Taking the time to listen and support people in their times of crisis is so rewarding.
Testimonials
The team are so supportive and you never feel alone - they are always on hand to help if you are worried and I have absolutely loved my 6 years of volunteering. I hope to continue for many years to come.
