Volunteer for Shout from New Zealand

Shout 85258 volunteers are essential to our service and at the heart of everything we do. They're highly trained and support people who are struggling to cope, helping them reach a calmer place.

We are looking for new volunteers based in New Zealand who can help us provide round the clock support for people struggling to cope. This will help us staff our 24/7 service, enabling us to keep talking to texters when it's the middle of the night for our UK volunteers and when other services are not available.

If this sounds like something you would like to be involved in and to join our wonderful community of volunteers, read on!

Testimonials

Having lived in the UK for a number of years and still having family and friends in the UK, it is a place still very close to my heart. Being able to support people in need at any time of the day has given me a huge sense of purpose. The community of volunteers and staff at Shout 85258 have been hugely welcoming and supportive, I feel proud to represent Shout.

New Zealand Shout Volunteers have the chance to:

  • Give 24/7 help to those in the UK who are struggling to cope at a time when most other means of support are not available.

  • Learn communication, active listening, problem solving skills that are valued by employers and learning institutions.

  • Be a part of a pioneering team and supportive community.

  • Connect with both UK volunteers and other New Zealand volunteers.

  • Volunteer from the comfort of your own home, at times that suit you.

  • Work with a dedicated Coach who'll support you during your journey.

Testimonials

What I love the most is the warm and caring community at Shout with other volunteers and Supervisors, and there's this sense of continuous growth and personal development.

Additional benefits of volunteering:

  • Over 90% of our volunteers feel a sense of purpose and that they are making a difference to texters’ lives.
  • You can volunteer during sociable hours. Our biggest motivation to welcome New Zealand volunteers is to support texters who need it during the night (UK time), which is of course day time in New Zealand! Demand increases during unsociable hours when many other support services are not available.
  • 83% of our volunteers would actively recommend Shout 85258 as an organisation to volunteer for.

But, being a volunteer isn't for everyone. You need to:

  • Be over 18.

  • Commit to 25 hours of online training and fulfil 200 hours of volunteering.

  • Have compassion and empathy as well as be able to be objective.

  • Put your own personal views to one side.

  • Have a secure web connection and access to a computer/laptop.

  • Provide two referees and consent to undergo a police vetting check.

Application waiting times

We are looking to prioritise applications from New Zealand to support demand of the service during the night time in the UK. You can expect your application to be processed within two weeks. If you have applied and have not heard from someone within this time, please contact info@giveusashout.org and we will look into this for you.

Thank you so much for your support and we are looking forward to welcoming you into the Shout community!
