Students, volunteer for Shout!

Students play a huge role in our volunteering community. By signing up, you'll be joining a team where 30% are under 25 and nearly a third tell us they're at college or university.

You'll receive 25 hours of free training and gain skills hugely valued by employers in areas like communication, active listening and problem-solving. Shout training will also prepare you to take life-saving conversations with people in mental health crisis, which 95% of Shout Volunteers say gives them a sense of purpose.

Reasons to become a Shout Volunteer

If you'd like to volunteer for Shout, you must:

  • Be over 18

  • Be resilient and mentally robust to help people in distress

  • Commit to 25 hours of online training and then fulfil 200 total hours of volunteering

  • Have empathy and be able to be objective

  • Put your own personal views to one side to help the texter

  • Have a secure web connection, laptop/computer and access to a quiet place

  • Be able to volunteer from the UK or New Zealand

  • Provide two referees and consent to undergo a background check
